Jason Hu

Designer labels: The real and the fake

Fakes are a dime a dozen, so much so that even when you’re wearing the real thing, most folks will think it’s fake.

MANY years ago, way back when man wasn’t universally obsessed with branded goods emblazoned with a designer’s name in huge shiny letters that leap out of your chest, your derrière, or your crotch, a good friend paid an insane amount of money for a designer T-shirt.

Now this T-shirt, let’s call it a Pierre Cher, was nothing much to look at. Indeed, it didn’t look any different from the T-shirts I usually bought for a fraction of the price from my local department store. But therein lay the problem. You see, my friend felt cheated by the thought that no one would be able to tell that her Pierre Cher T-shirt was more expensive than my Jusco number. A few days after the T-shirt’s premiere, I bumped into my friend again.

She was still wearing her Pierre Cher (trying to get her money’s worth out of it, I suspect), but this time there was something different about it: a label bearing the designer’s name was neatly sewn across her left breast. “I didn’t notice that label before,” I said.

“It wasn’t there before,” she said. “I felt bad that no one would know that this is a Pierre Cher, so I removed the label from the inside of the neck – and voila!”

“Isn’t that a bit extreme?”

“Not at all. It’s all about the prestige and being noticed. You wouldn’t buy a Rolex watch, and then keep it tucked under your sleeve. Or purchase a Mercedes, only to drive around in it after dark.”

“But prestige only works if I’m a brand snob, too. If I’m not, I won’t be impressed by your T-shirt. I’ll just think that you paid way too much for a piece of cotton and spent way too much time sewing a label onto it for the benefit of others.”

Of course, that was way back in the dark ages, way before designers began making casual clothes that people can actually wear.

These days, designer labels are everywhere. Go to any shopping mall and you’ll see fashion slaves being used as free advertising. Every time a young man wears his Calvin Klein underwear with the branded waistband peeking out over the top of his trousers for all to see, Mr Klein’s cash register goes kaching!

Every time a young girl wears a T-shirt with D&G emblazoned across the front using enough bling to blind you, Messrs Dolce and Gabbana high-five each other and wonder how many different ways they can apply their initials to a teensy bit of fabric churned out of a factory in Vietnam for a few dong.

Of course, brand prestige takes a bit of a beating in countries like Malaysia, where many of the designer clothes and accessories worn by label-minded people are knock-offs. You only need to visit Penang’s famous Batu Ferringhi night market to see that there is a huge demand for fake goods, and not just with local people. Many westerners return from their beach holiday in Penang with Giorgio Armani, Moschino and Gucci stuffed in their suitcases, all purchased for less than the price of a cup of designer coffee back home.

Heck, even the mother of the man who fries the best char kway teow in Penang wears designer T-shirts. Her face may be lined, her hair grey and her teeth set in her shrinking gums like random peanuts standing to wobbly attention, but she wears the same T-shirts as Paris Hilton and Madonna as she attends to customers at her son’s coffee shop stall.

She can’t even pronounce the name “Versace” correctly or tell you that Chanel is French, but she’ll wear those T-shirts until she can’t get any more wear out of them.

This must surely have diluted the demand for original designer goods in Malaysia. I mean to say, why would you fork out hundreds of ringgit for that branded T-shirt you saw in the shopping mall the other day when your maid probably has an almost identical one – in four colours?

There are so many fakes around these days, that even when you’re wearing the real thing, most folks will think it’s fake. I mean to say, you can’t even wear your over-priced garb to the coffee shop without running the risk of the char kway teow woman pointing out that you’re wearing the same T-shirt as her.

“Buy one, free one?” she’ll say, as she gives you the thumbs up sign between wrapping fried noodles in yesterday’s newspaper.

Like, where got class lah?

Stop it, 1 Malaysia!

I am really tired of 1 Malaysia. I am really tired of everyone trying to outdo each other in saying how united we are, how 1 Malaysia is already embedded in our daily lives, and how we love each other so much because of mamak stalls, our shared childhoods and “teh tarik.”

Seriously, let’s cut the crap. 1 Malaysia is not a party theme where we all dress up in Malaysian flags, cut into the shape of the number one; or an essay topic where we all write about and then read out what it means to us as individuals.

Come on! Spare me the nauseous faecal matter. Some of us are older than 12 and have already left primary school. Some of us are just fed up! Stop talking about it!

What we’re not talking about and what is the real crux of the matter: we are all racists. It’s part of us, part of how we grew up. We were all taught — intentionally, most of the time; unintentionally, sometimes — that each race is different.

Flip open any school textbook and you will see the description of the typical characteristics of a Malay, Chinese and Indian, the costumes, the food. Yes, the kids from different races play together and ask inquisitively (for those lessons in grammar) about each other’s customs but at the end of the day, our race is a fundamental part of our own identity.

Seriously how many people say: “I am a Malaysian...” and stop there? Try it. It’s hard, isn’t it? The urge to continue your introduction with “I’m a Malay” or “I’m a Chinese,” etc, is just so deeply embedded that it would take tremendous effort to stop yourself from saying your race.

Everyone laughs knowingly when someone gets your race wrong. A Malay mistaken for a Chinese probably has very fair complexion. A Chinese mistaken for a Malay would be furious or embarrassed or both because the Chinese are extremely proud of their family name and heritage. (To the Chinese, Malay families are “nameless” because names are not passed down through the generations). We all know that. I know many Chinese people would be insulted to be mistaken for an Indian but let’s not even go there.

Yes, the tick box for race has to be removed from our official forms, bladiblabla. But can we remove race as a subject in our conversations? When someone describes another as “so Cina” or “so Melayu”, can you stop the conversation and reprimand the person for being racist?

When someone asks you about your culture, can you describe it without using any reference to the race of your family? When someone says “he’s a Chinese”, just say back: “He’s a Malaysian and that’s all I care.” No “buts”. I don’t care if he’s a descendant of Mao Tze Dong, as long as he has a Malaysian passport, he’s a Malaysian and that’s all that matters. Say it. Try it out on your own tongue, and see how the words roll off it…

It sounds weird, doesn’t it, because it’s hard. As well-meaning as you might be, it’s almost impossible to talk about yourself, ourselves, without referencing the race that our families come from.

And you know what? That’s not good enough. Because that means we’re not trying hard enough. Racial differentiation in our country has been a source of disunity, party politics (which we are all fed up of), and pesky social tension that serves no one (except those playing racial politics to manipulate us citizens)! So we must try harder to drop racial differentiation in all of our daily discourse.

Here’s the challenge: Don’t mention, refer to or even think about what race you are, or the person you are talking to. If you just met the person, ask for the name and where he/she is from. Full stop. Don’t even think about asking for the race, even though you can probably guess from the name.

A person’s identity is made up of lots of things, not just race. So instead of pigeon-holing the person into a race box, put him in a different box instead. Such as: Where he was born, where he lives, what’s his hobby, or the type of car he drives.

Like all bad habits, it’s much easier to get rid of the old habit if you have a new one to replace it with.

See how long you can go without referring to a person’s race. A day? Two days? Two weeks? Two months? Only when you can go about your daily life, interacting with all your family and friends without referring to anyone by their race, at all, can you say you are truly living the 1 Malaysia life.

So, stop talking about it. Please. Just live it.

ps. try look at those comments by others too..

Let's be realistic! We will never be able to get away from this issue. Not now, not by 2020 or beyond. Deal with it!

Why put on a new coat of paint and call it 1Malaysia when the political parties are fishing for votes right before an election. After all the dusts have settled down post election...we are back to the same, Malay, Chinese, Indian and lain lain.

A leopard will never lose its stripes. Don't waste time. Be productive and channel your energy to make a decent living for yourself and your family, unless you are in the PR department looking to do a make over for the country.

Teoh's last note - why only 10 months later?

There’s a very good reason why the police investigator ‘found’ a note, allegedly a suicide note as asserted by our remarkable world renowned Attorney General (AG), two months after Teoh’s mysterious death on the eve of his wedding when he had just a short while prior to his interrogation by MACC and subsequent death, phoned his best man to remind the latter of the important event the following day.

Strange as it may seem, that MACC had correctly claimed Teoh committed suicide immediately following the poor man’s death, two months BEFORE the suicide note ('suicide' as alleged by the AG) was fantastically discovered from Teoh’s sling bag, probably from a very secret compartment hitherto unbeknownst to police, MACC and even Dan Brown or for that matter, RPK.

We were aware that there had been accusations by MACC and police that Teoh revealed the corruption of his boss, Selangor DAP chief Ean Yong Hian Wah to the MACC, an action apparently so stressful that Teoh forgot about his wedding in order to seek relief in the Netherworld.

And we know that immediately after his death, his belongings, laptop and underwear were all diligently, scrupulously and carefully sifted for evidence of the DAP’s wrongdoings, though (perhaps due to the secret compartment in his bag) nothing incriminating was found.

But more significant than the wondrous timely discovery of a suicide note ('suicide' according to the AG) two months after Teoh’s had purportedly committed suicide (according to the AG) was the AG withholding such an important piece of evidence from the coroner’s court until now, 10 months after it was found.

The AG claimed he wanted to do the job for the coroner, namely in proving the authenticity of the note. Don't we just love the AG for such diligence, always so helpful, so thoughtful, so law abiding that surely we cannot help but scream, screech and shriek out of pride for our No 1 Law Officer. He deserves the Nobel Prize for Chemistry!

10 months after its discovery! Of course we all know that time is important and necessary to ‘prepare’ proper evidence – ask Colin Powell about the importance of preparation when he as US Secretary of State presented ‘evidence’ of Saddam Hussein’s illicit and dangerous WMD programs to the UN Security Council. He (Gani Patail, not f* Powell) deserves the Nobel Prize for Literature!

Then more gratitude would be due to some for the discovery of this vital piece of now-authenticated (by the wonderful AG) piece of evidence – it had been none other than UMNO Senator Ezam who alerted the authorities to it; he heard it from pro UMNO blogs – it’s just marvelous that UMNO bloggers and Senator Ezam had chipped in to support discovery of evidence even before the coroner’s court and the lawyer for the Teoh’s family had known about it. These are Towering Malaysians.

But in the midst fo accolades and gratitude expressed, I do have a complaint against the journalists who AGAIN misquoted that wonderful man, Mr Abdul Gani Patail, the world renowned Malaysian AG. They incorrectly quoted him saying he was briefed by the investigation officer (IO) that he (Ahmad Nazri the IO) conducted a thorough search after being advised by a psychiatrist that, ordinarily, a note would be left in a suicide case.

There’s one observation and one error in that quote:

Observation“… ordinarily, a note would be left in a suicide case.”

I cannot help but applaud the incredibly unerring accuracy and prescience of the IO and psychiatrist that Teoh’s death was a ‘suicide case’, an important advice which then motivated the IO to search more vigorously for a note which would ‘ordinarily’ be left behind to help police investigation, and indeed it had been such valuable advice that stimulated the IO into (I presume) discovering the secret compartment in Teoh’s sling bag which brought forth the note, alleged by the AG as a suicide note.

The note apparently reflected Teoh’s grief for revealing his boss’ naughtiness to the MACC (as correctly claimed by the MACC one year ago – they have been so accurate that I am going to see them for Empat Ekor forecast) though I am still puzzled why the MACC haven't been all over Ean Yong Hian Wah to finish him off – maybe the MACC officers are compassionate people? Well, they may deserve nomination for the Nobel Prize for Peace!

Noted Error/Misquote – “…after being advised by a psychiatrist that, ordinarily, a note would be left …”

The AG didn’t say ‘psychiatrist’ but ‘psychic’. Yes, the IO was advised by a psychic that the late Teoh Beng Hock had left a note in his sling bag for them, two months after he was interred. Bloody journalists should get their facts right and stop misquoting our wonderful AG.

Now what was it I said in my initial sentence in this post?

Oh yes, There’s a very good reason why police investigator ‘found’ a note, allegedly a suicide note as asserted by our remarkable world renowned Attorney General (AG), two months after Teoh’s mysterious death …” and why the AG had hung on to it for ten months.

We have to blame Thai pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand who is due to present her expert testimony this month, that Teoh Beng Hock was subjected to strangulation prior to his death fall.

All this psychic stuff wouldn’t have been necessary if that Thai woman wasn’t coming or wasn't so expertly and fearlessly truthful.
