Kuala Lumpur Shocking Incident

I have withnessed something very shocking today which I think I need to say something about it. While I was walking to Pavilion KL for dinner just now, when I reached the fountain area at the main entrance (around 6.50pm), I heard a very loud glass breaking sound. Everyone, including foreign tourists were shocked to see a man trying to break the windscreen of a bus.

Looking at the incident, I belief it must be a minor accident where the bus have knocked a Proton Wira from the back. The man were shouting to the driver while keep hitting the bus windscreen with the stick for at least 5 times. Very obvious, this guy is a road bully, equipped with a weapon in his car and it was an unlucky day for the bus driver.

Anyway, this is not the main point. Everyone was so shocked (can see from the expression of all the folks around, especially the tourists) because there were policemen standing from far witnessing the incident  but did not take any action to stop the man. A tourist asked me is that guy in blue color uniform a policeman. I answered yes to the tourist, and then he went to ask the policeman why he is not stopping that man. The policeman  answered "I am a police hired by Pavilion KL (polis bantuan) and the incident is across the road near Starhill side, can't do anything". The tourist (and people around who heard their conversation) were speechless.

Then, a traffic police officer came, but he was standing far away from that angry man. Again, that man hit the bus but the officer did not stop that man. He was trying to do his job but guiding the traffic, directing other cars to move. I wonder why policeman can't stop that angry man hitting the bus. What if that guy hit on people? Only by then the policeman will react? I just don't understand, and I think everyone there has the same question too?! They are trained and equipped to stop the violent but just stood there. After awhile, the man got into his car and drove off...and guess what, the traffic police officer also happily drove off on his motorcycle, left only the bus driver (helpless).

In movie, incident like this, we normally see the policeman will take action on the man, at least ask for his ID or license, check the man background by intercom to HQ, question him on possessing a long stick in his car, or even charge him for attempting to damage others properties. Somehow, that man have committed an offence...but allowed to drove off. Is this the law now in Malaysia? So many tourists saw the incident and how they think about our country now? If next year is Visit a Malaysia year, do you think incident like this encourages inbound tour?! Should we Rakyat go stop that man ourselves?!

What is happening to our safety when the policeman can't do anything to stop such violent incident. If I didn't witness this myself, I won't belief things like this can happen....Seeing is Believing!!!

3 Reasons to Travel While You’re Young

The other night, I had a conversation with a young woman who had a number of decisions ahead of her, one of which was whether she should go to grad school or travel the world.
I told her to travel. Hands down. No excuse. Just go.

She sighed.

“Yeah, but…”

Never were more fatal words spoken.
Yeah, but… what about debt?
Yeah, but… what about my job?
Yeah, but… what about my boyfriend (or dog or car or whatever)?
“Yeah, but…” is pernicious. Because it makes it sound like we have the best of intentions when really we are just too scared to do what we should.
It allows us to be cowards, while sounding noble.
Most people I know who waited to travel the world never did. Conversely, plenty of people who waited for grad school or a steady job and traveled still did those things — eventually.
Be careful of the yeah-but. The yeah-but will kill your dreams.
I was so stirred by this conversation that I shared it with a group of about thirty young adults last night, many who were asking these very questions.

The life you’ve always wanted

When you get older, life seems to just sort of happen to you. Your youth is a time of total empowerment.
You get to do what you want. As you mature and gain new responsibilities, you have to be very intentional about making sure you don’t lose sight of what’s important.
So if you still have a reasonable amount of control over your circumstances, you should do what really matters. Because life won’t always be just about you.
During early adulthood, your worldview is still being formed. It’s important to steward this time — to give yourself opportunities to grow. A good way to do that is to travel.
So, young person, travel.
Travel wide and far.
Travel boldly.
Travel with full abandon.
You will regret few risks you take, when it comes to this. I promise you.
There are three reasons to travel while you’re young:

1. Traveling teaches you to live an adventure

When you look back on your life, you will have moments of which you are proud and maybe a few you regret. It’s likely that the following won’t be on the latter list:
  • Bicycled across the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • Appeared on Italian TV.
  • Hiked a Mayan ruin.
  • Learned Spanish in three months.
  • Toured Europe by train.
They’re not on mine (fun fact: I’ve done all of the above).
What, then, will be?
  • Holding back.
  • Being afraid.
  • Making excuses.
  • Not taking more risks.
  • Waiting.
While you’re young, you should travel.
You should take the time to see the world and taste the fullness of life. It’s worth whatever investment or money or sacrifice of time required on your part.
It’s not about being a tourist. It’s about experiencing true risk and adventure so you don’t have to live in fear for the rest of your life.

2. Traveling helps you encounter compassion

In your youth, you will make choices that will define you. The disciplines you begin now will be with you for the rest of your life.
Traveling will change you like little else can. It will put you in places that will force you to care for issues that are bigger than you.
If you go to southeast Asia, you may encounter the slave trade. If eastern Europe, you may see the effects of genocide and religious persecution. If Haiti, you’ll witness the the ugly side Western paternalism.
Your heart will break.
You will begin to understand that the world is both a big and small place. You will have a new-found respect for the pain and suffering that over half of the world takes for granted on a daily basis. And you will feel more connected to your fellow human beings in a deep and lasting way.
You will learn to care.

3. Traveling allows you to get some culture

While you’re still young, you should get cultured. Get to know the world and the magnificent people that fill it.
There’s nothing quite like walking alongside the Coliseum or seeing Michelangelo’sDavid in person. I can describe the city of San Juan and its amazing beaches and historic sites to you, but you really have to see it for yourself to experience it. You can read all the books in the world about the Great Wall of China or The Louvre, butbeing there is a different story.
The world is a stunning place, full of outstanding works of art. See it.
Do this while you’re still young. Do not squander this time. You will never have it again.
You have a crucial opportunity to invest in the next season of your life now. Whatever you sow, you will eventually reap. Please. For your sake, do this.
You won’t always be young. And life won’t always be just about you. So travel. Experience the world for all it’s worth. Become a person of culture, adventure, and compassion.

“What if I’m not young?”

Travel, anyway. It may not be easy to do, but find a way to get out of your comfort zone. It’s really never too late.
But if you haven’t gotten sucked into the routine of life yet, I implore you — travel. It will never be easier than it is right now for you to do that which really matters.

21 Surprising Things You Can Make In A Rice Cooker

It’s time you outsmarted the machine.

You have been lied to your entire life.

You have been lied to your entire life.

A rice cooker can cook more than rice.

Yes, a standard electric rice cooker is designed to bring rice to a boil, sense when it needs to reduce to a simmer, then lower the heat again to keep rice at serving temperature without overcooking it.

That may sound like a very smart little machine, but YOU ARE SMARTER. You can trick the thermostat (just press “Cook” again) and manipulate that nonstick cooking surface to do whatever you want!

In her excellent New York Times piece on the topic, Julia Moskin explains it just right: “Cooking foods other than rice in a rice cooker is like baking a layer cake in an Easy-Bake oven: best approached with patience, curiosity and something to snack on in the meantime.”

But it’s worth the experimentation, especially for people who don’t have a full stove or a large kitchen. Just take it from Roger Ebert (RIP). Put a bunch of ingredients in there and give it a go. Melt a little butter, add onions or shallots, and use it the same way you might a big dutch oven. Know that the heat doesn’t get very high. Here are some recipes to try.

When You Look Closely At These 10 Photos, You’ll See Why They Mean So Much.

Photographer Tom Hussey created a series of pictures that will speak to you, no matter your age, race, beliefs or occupation. The Reflection photos illustrate just how much we change in our lives and how it seems to happen all at once, no matter how many years actually go by. These will grip your soul.
Take time to appreciate every day, because these years will be gone before you know it. You can visit Tom Hussey’s site here.

Can you survive a day in KL with RM10?

Far and wide, Klang Valley-ites have been lamenting that it is getting more and more difficult to survive on the income they earn. But there are still those who say that it is perfectly possible to be comfortable with a little bit of financial management. To see what the reality really is on the ground, we armed our writer with RM10 to take on a day in Kuala Lumpur.

Charioting your way to the city
As the sub-header suggests, first of all, one needs to get to the city – be it for work, play or general hanging about. Charioting, yes, but not with the ancient horse-drawn two-wheeled vehicle of course (although it can save you money on petrol but fill our streets with horse manure). Rather, you will get there with the modern ‘chariots’ available such as a bus, taxi or the LRT. With RM10, we had no choice but to take the cheapest option available.

Though walking would of course be even cheaper; it’s not a suitable option if you work in Jalan Tun Razak and live in Cheras. Thus, we looked up bus fares. Depending on where you stay and where you work, taking a bus to and fro will cost anywhere between RM3 to RM7 per day. Taking the middle sum of RM5 per day for transport (although may God help you if you need to commute longer on a packed bus and pay RM7 per day, with only RM3 to spare for lunch), you will be left with a ‘grand’ RM5 for lunch and anything else you may need to pay for during the day.

Money for the tummy
Ah, lunchtime. It’s what every office worker dreams about from the moment they clock in. But what kind of fantasy lunch could one have with RM5? With such an amount, the choices of what and where to eat becomes rather limited. Forget a McDonald’s McValue meal at RM5.95; it’s not enough value for your budget. Your best bet would probably be the mamak restaurant or a hawker centre that sells economy rice. Even opting for one of these no-frills eateries; with RM5 you won’t be able to get any drinks beyond plain water (RM0.30) or diluted Chinese tea (RM0.50). If you decide to remain parched until you get back to the office water cooler; you will have your RM5 intact for food.

But you will have to be cautious of what you pick especially if you are having economy rice. It is best to ask how much each dish is to be on the safe side of not taking more than your balance of RM5. If you are afraid to ask and appear like a right cheapskate; the safest bet is to go vegetarian. A bunch of vegetables on rice is unlikely to cost more than RM4; leaving you with RM1 should you need to buy a sweet. Yes, A sweet.
On the other hand, having lunch at a mamak stall could be less of a headache. Just stay away from the nasi kandar section. Instead, stick to the basics such as maggi goreng or roti canai. The most a mamak could charge you for a maggi goreng is RM4 (and that usually doesn’t happen unless it’s a truly uppity mamak) and a max of RM2 for a roti (unless you’ve got sardines or something in it). If you decide on a roti; you might be able to squeeze in a limau ais. Lucky you.

The verdict
Is it possible to survive in KL on RM10 a day? Yes, but as you can see, you won’t be too near comfortable. RM10 also means you won’t be able to spend on anything else besides your commute and lunch. Forget teatime or even breakfast! With that said, you’d think RM10 a measly amount but if you do a bit of easy calculation, it’s RM50 a week and RM200 a month. For a minimum wager pulling RM1000 to RM1500; RM200 is a good fraction of their income.

The easy answer to this question simply is; yes you can survive but not half as well as you should considering the level of wages.

Do you have any suggestions or ideas on how to make your RM10 go further? Let us know!
