Where’s my mortgage?

Will Bank Negara’s recent loan regulations herald a local credit crunch and bursting of the bubble?

These are interesting times, said a property consultant over lunch recently. The pumping of liquidity by the US, UK, Europe and Japan into their economies, and by extension into the world, by the trillions of dollars, has been on an unprecedented scale. It’s like being part of a mass global experiment, the results of which we’re not quite sure, but will surely be of massive consequences.

So far, quantitative easing seems to have worked. The US is showing positive figures and we have not seen the collapse of capitalism. The “we are the 99%”-ers have not taken over from the purported 1% Illuminati controlling the world’s wealth and economy. Nor has the US fallen off a fiscal cliff.

The Occupy movement still continues but seems to have lost momentum

In Malaysia, we have smugly ridden out the turmoils. While the property market has frozen for several years in the UK, banks still push you credit cards here (I just picked up a cool suitcase, Ikea freebies and travel miles upon approval) and people don’t think twice about eating out on RM50 per person.

In terms of property, launches have been aplenty, and panel bankers line up to serve you. Prices in some places have doubled since 2008 and we can even now take over parts of London… Malaysia boleh!

What, me worry?

If you were to read Bank Negara’s latest Financial Stability and Payment Systems Report 2012, everything sounds hunky dory. The percentage of impaired (or non-performing) loans dropped last year to 1.5% for household loans, down from 1.8% in 2011 and 2.3% in 2010.

“Indicators of aggregate household resilience are sound with total and liquid household financial buffers remaining stable,” goes the report. “More importantly, indicators in the banking sector continue to support the sound overall credit quality of household loans from the banking system.”

All very controlled and dependable, just like our iron banking lady, Tan Sri Zeti Aziz, it seems.

Special advisor to Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) Dr Lim Mah Hui (left) and CAP president S.M. Mohamed Idris showing charts on the comparison of household debt and disposable income as well as the debt service ratio in Malaysia.

Yes, Bank Negara may have lost a bit of cool recently by admitting that profligate loans have encouraged households to accumulate excessive debt. Housing, car, credit card and personal loans have increased “at a strong pace”–12% per year over the last few years–and now represents 81% of our national income.

This is risky because if interest rates rise and the economy falters, people will lose jobs and find it difficult to pay their debts; banks then would be out of money which they owe to deposit holders or other banks.

To counter this, Bank Negara recently announced it would limit mortgage tenures to 35 years. It may also curb developer interest-bearing schemes (DIBS)–where property builders pay for buyers’ loan interests during construction. Luckily, all these are calculated moves to slow down rather than crash a vibrant property market, aren’t they?

Over the last couple of weeks, however, we’ve been hearing phrases which would not normally be mentioned crop up: bad words like “interest rates increase”, “capital flight”, and “price correction”. Do we possibly see the tide turning?

Interest rates won’t rise, or will they?

Bernanke testified in Capitol Hill recently that there is a risk that Congressional fiscal policy “will restrain economic growth over the next few quarters by more than we currently expect.”

Economy watchers have for some time placed any increase in interest rates beyond the immediate future, next year at the earliest.

Low interest rates have provided cheap and easy credit and mortgages in Malaysia have grown steadily. Last year, more than half of all household loans–56%–were for buying properties, said Bank Negara’s report. The proportion of them taking multiple loans, furthermore, had risen, “signaling a resumption in demand for housing credit for investment purposes”.

After all, advertisements tout property as a means of achieving wealth and financial freedom. Gurus tell you that if you stretch your loans out, your monthly instalments will come out lower than your rentals (“positive cash flow”), and with enough properties, you may even quit your job!

Recently however, US Federal Reserve chief, Ben Bernanke (the American Tan Sri Zeti) indicated that it might begin tapering off quantitative easing as long as labour markets continue to improve. Although he’s qualified this in several aspects, US interest rates have risen in response, making the dollar and US assets possibly attractive propositions again. Many thus anticipate funds, which had flowed into emerging markets during the financial crisis, to flow back to the US and Europe again.

Manulife Asset Management Services Bhd chief investment officer Jason Chong indeed hinted that there may be a possible mass-exit of foreign investors from the Malaysian bond, money or equity markets.

To stem this capital flight, and also to protect attendant currency falls, India and Indonesia have increased interest rates up to 2%. Bank of Canada has also said that it would “gradually normalize” borrowing costs over time as the slack in the economy disappears and inflation picks up. Brazil, meanwhile, increased rates 0.5% to battle inflation. Here in Malaysia, Standard Chartered made the recent, bold prediction that rates might increase by 0.25% as early as November.

What would be its impact? For me, it means an increase in monthly instalments of RM100 per month. Imagine if I had three mortgages and my instalments went up on all of them? If I were a professional landlord, I could now be cash flow negative with my dreams of financial freedom soured.

Another development to tighten funds would be the Basel III reforms, which require the world’s banks to have enough cash in their vaults and not to lend out too much, to avoid further banking failures. Bank Negara is confident that our banks would have no problem meeting the requirements by 2018, but it would surely mean a constraint on lending.

Already, word on the ground from property sales people goes that some banks are starting to approve only 80% loans for those already servicing another residential property loan.

Potential correction

The figures show noticeable spikes in the Malaysian House Price Index and Index of Units Launched by Price for properties priced above RM1mil from late 2010.

Investors have also started talking about a “potential correction” in the property market, that runaway property prices indicate the top of a property cycle.

“There are risks faced by Malaysian banks in relation to high household debt and a potential correction in the country’s property market, but we think there is a low likelihood of these risks playing out in the next 12 to 18 months,” said credit ratings firm Moody’s in Singapore recently.

The property life cycle, as drawn out by real estate blogger AgentDiary, postulates that Malaysia is at the top of the cycle, with characteristics including transaction price peak and the “property price never drops” rhetoric.

You wouldn’t have known it from the primary market. YTL Land & Development Bhd’s preview of its Fennel project in Sentul East, priced at RM700 per sq ft, sold out two blocks within two days.

Low Yat Group’s Tribeca project on Jalan Imbi has managed to sell at prices ranging from RM1,800 to RM2,400 per sq ft to mainly foreign buyers.

Even at stratospheric prices between RM1,800 to RM2,400 per sq ft, Low Yat Group sold almost half its apartments in its Tribeca project on Jalan Imbi. Arcoris Mont’Kiara by UEM Sunrise Bhd, meanwhile, managed to chart about 90% of sales before its show units debuted to the public. The majority of Tribeca’s units were sold to foreign buyers, from the likes of Indonesia, China and Taiwan, however, while Arcoris’ developers gave significant rebates as sales incentives.

Arcoris Mont’Kiara has seen nearly complete take-up, as packaged with significant incentives.

Property investor Michael Tan reckons that if there were to be a bubble bursting, it could happen within the next couple of years, when many projects bought during the 2010 to 2012 property bull run are completed: “Many were sold on DIBS, so buyers didn’t fork out any cash until completion, not to mention all the attractive rebates. But when the properties come on stream, many will be looking to flip or rent out, and that will be the first test: whether they can find buyers or tenants.”

In terms of housing affordability, the ratio of average house prices in Malaysia, in relation to household income, comes in at about four. In rapidly emerging markets, this is still acceptable, noted valuer Elvin Fernandez has said. However, the figure rises to six, seven or even eight in certain areas of the country, he adds, and this is similar to the ratios that were seen in American houses prices “before they crashed down towards the figure of three during the sub-prime crisis, and three is some kind of gravitational pull for house prices”.

A return to Danaharta?

Mitraland Group chairman Dato’ Johan Ariffin (left) and group CEO Chuah Theong Yee believe that regulation of the property market will benefit the industry in the long run.

Datuk Johan Ariffin, previous senior GM for Pengurusan Danaharta Nasional Bhd’s property division, and now chairman of property developer Mitraland Sdn Bhd, doesn’t believe there will be a return to the last Asian Financial Crisis however. So many loans defaulted then that the government formed Danaharta to buy them out from cash-poor banks.

“No, it’s a different landscape today,” says Johan who also sits on the board of Maybank and Sime Darby Properties. “Then, it was a currency thing, many people had overgeared and businesses had borrowed too much. Today, our banks are much stronger, they have been recapitalised and are very well run compared to 12 years ago. It would take a lot for something to affect the whole system.”

One thing’s for sure, restrictions cool buyer sentiments, such as when the 70% loan cap for the third home and net income rule were announced in 2010 and last year, respectively.

Bank Negara’s regulations may dampen sales but they will weed out speculators, says Dato’ Johan Ariffin, chairman of Mitraland Group which develops projects such as 16 Quartz in Taman Melawati, pictured.

“While it may have taken us three months to hit 60% sales in the past, today it takes us six months to do it, because your buyers come, they are interested but they can’t qualify for a loan then you have to find new buyers,” says Johan.

This means that developers must have enough funds to tie them over a delay in sales. “In our cash flow planning, we already anticipate and make provision for a longer initial sales period. This just means less speculators and more genuine buyers.”

So is everything really under control then, as Bank Negara intimates? Are we just having a controlled slowdown rather than a crash? As a property watcher said over breakfast, you never know. Just like in the late ‘90s, the Asian Financial Crisis took most of us by surprise. We are living in one of history’s largest financial experiments, though, and whether Malaysian property sees a harsh or soft ride towards fundamental values will surely be affected by its outcome… Watch this space.

Base on this article MIEA: No threat of property bubble mention by our "rich" Malaysian Institute of Estate Agents (MIEA) president Siva Shanker.

“We are expecting a nice steady growth of 10% maybe 12% or 13% if we are lucky. The growth won’t echo the phenomenal growth of about 30% like we did previously,” Siva said in a Property Market Outlook: Post GE13 briefing yesterday." so... there's the words "if we are lucky" we (citizen) are the unlucky one as usual~~~ They are asking the estate agents. I'd always say my flowers smell nice when I'm a Florist.

Could your daily vitamin pills take years off your life? They're taken by thousands to boost their health but recent studies have found some supplements could do more harm than good

  • Fish oil capsules have been linked to high levels of prostate cancer
  • In another study, high dosages of vitamin C led to kidney stones
  • Vitamin E supplement takers developed heart failure
  • Better off getting vitamins by eating healthy diet
Are supplements a quick health fix or can vitamins actually be bad for you?

Vitamin pills are big business - from chewable ones for children and tablets especially tailored for women going through the menopause to essential oils for dodgy joints and high-dose vitamin C to pep up your immune system, there’s a supplement for everyone.

But can vitamins actually be bad for your health?

It seems that your daily pill can do more harm than good. Indeed, last week saw the revelation that fish oil capsules have been linked to high levels of prostate cancer - a shock for the millions who take fish oils or omega-3 fatty acids every day in the quest to ease joint pain, improve heart health and fight mental decline.

A study of more than 2,000 men found that those with the highest levels of omega-3 in their blood were 71 per cent more likely to develop the most lethal form of prostate cancer, and 44 per cent more likely to develop low-grade prostate cancer.

And it’s not just omega-3 that is under scrutiny. According to Dr Alan Kristal, who led the study at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle, there is surprisingly little evidence that any vitamin or mineral pills prevent disease - unless people are suffering from a nutrient deficiency.

‘As we do more and more of these studies, we find high doses of supplements have no effect or increase the risk of the disease you are trying to prevent,’ he says. Yet millions of busy Britons take vitamins to compensate for a poor diet.

One in three of us takes a supplement, and we spend about £209 million a year on vitamin pills. The message last week from experts was not to panic.

For most people, taking multivitamin and mineral supplements at the recommended dose is safe.
So amid all this confusing and sometimes contradictory advice, which supplements work and, more importantly, which ones are safe?

MULTIVITAMINS

Big business: One in three of us takes a supplement - but is it worth it?

While they might be the most wide-ranging supplement in the UK - providing 100 per cent of our daily allowance of everything from vitamin B to copper - there is little evidence that they do any good.

In 2010, French researchers followed 8,000 volunteers who had taken either a multivitamin or a dummy placebo pill for six years.

They found that those who popped the vitamin pill were just as likely to suffer heart disease or cancer as those taking the placebo.

That work followed a 2008 major review of 67 studies - involving 230,000 people - which found no evidence that multivitamins prolonged life.

Some studies have even suggested that high doses could do more harm than good.

In 2011, the Iowa Women’s Health Study looked at the health of more than 38,000 older women and found that women who regularly took multivitamins were 2.4  per cent more likely to die over the 19 years of the study.

Their research also showed that use of vitamin B6 increased the risk of death during the study by 4.1 per cent, folic acid by 5.9 per cent, iron by 3.9 per cent, magnesium by 3.6 per cent, zinc by 3 per cent and copper by 18 per cent.

However, the study didn’t take into account the fact that many people start taking heavy doses of vitamins only when they develop serious diseases such as cancer.

But Dr Kristal says: ‘Dozens of studies of multivitamins show that they do absolutely nothing at the recommended doses.’

So if your diet contains plenty of fresh food and your five-a-day, it’s unlikely a multivitamin pill is essential.

VITAMIN C

Doctors have known since the 1750s, when British sailors were first issued with limes, that vitamin C is essential for health. It helps to heal wounds, strengthens the body’s connective tissues and keeps cells healthy.

But despite the many health claims made about vitamin C, there is little evidence that it does much good as a supplement.

While it does appear to shorten the duration of colds, there is little real proof that it staves off illness, Dr Kristal says.

And the high doses recommended by some supporters of alternative medicine may do more harm than good.

In February, an 11-year study of more than 23,000 men found that those who took high doses of the supplement - typically 1,000 mg - were twice as likely to develop kidney stones compared to men who took no pills.

A 2002 study showed that 1g doses of vitamin  C and vitamin E almost trebled the risk of premature death among postmenopausal women in any year.

The Department of Health says adults need 40 mg a day but doses up to 1,000 mg a day are unlikely to cause harm. Anyone worried about their intake should decide whether they are exceeding their safe daily dose.

'For example, the effervescent vitamin drink Berocca contains 476 mg. Two doses would take you close the recommended limit.'

VITAMIN E

Found in nuts, germs, wheat and oils, vitamin E is vital for healthy cells. According to the Department of Health, most adults need between 3 mg and 4 mg a day.
Brain boost
Vitamin B supplements can help stave off Alzheimer's disease because they reduce brain shrinkage, claims a study by Oxford University
Studies have shown that foods rich in vitamin E may protect against heart disease. But there is little evidence that vitamin E pills do the same - and some that say they may do harm.

In 2011, U.S. researchers at Cleveland Clinic found that men who took a ‘high strength’ 268 mg vitamin E pill each day during the seven year study were 17 per cent more likely to develop prostate cancer than men who did not take the supplement.

And, in 2005, a seven-year study of 4,000 people found it increased the risk of heart failure by 13 per cent.

While the Department of Health says taking 540 mg or less a day is unlikely to do harm, the prostate cancer study published by Dr Kristal also looked at the effect of daily 400 mg vitamin E doses.

Dr Kristal says: ‘It increased the risk of prostate cancer by 17 per cent. We don’t know why. But one thing to remember is that, unlike vitamin C, it is soluble in fat and so levels build up in the body over time.’

Experts say that one egg or 28 g of almonds a day should provide all the vitamin E you need - making it unlikely that any of us need a supplement.

Enough: A glass of milk and a yoghurt meets our daily calcium limit

CALCIUM

Calcium is often taken by middle-aged and older people to protect their bones. There is also evidence that it can prevent the recurrence of bowel polyps - growths that may develop into cancer.
However, calcium supplements could increase the risk of heart disease in men, according to a study in February from the U.S. National Cancer Institute.

A study of 388,000 people found that men who took more than 1,000 mg, or 1 g, a day in supplements were at greater risk of heart problems - and had a 20 per cent higher risk of death.

Women were not at greater risk, the Journal of the American Medical Association found. Scientists believe that high calcium levels harden the arteries, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The Food Standards Agency recommends adults have 700 mg of calcium a day. One yoghurt and a 300 ml glass of milk would meet your daily calcium limit, so it’s unlikely you would need a supplement.

SELENIUM

Selenium is a trace mineral found in seafood, meat and grains. It is essential in small doses and selenium deficiency is linked to mental decline, impaired immune systems and premature death.

But although it is commonly recommended to help prevent heart disease, too much can be harmful. The Department of Health says men need 0.075 mg a day, and women 0.06mg, in their diet. But after looking at data from 20,000 adults, Warwick Medical School researchers found that it did little to lower the incidence of heart disease in people with a good diet.

High doses were linked to type 2 diabetes, the authors reported in the Cochrane Library journal.

BETA CAROTENE

Beta carotene is a pigment that gives yellow and orange plants colour. The body converts beta carotene to vitamin A, which we need for good vision, healthy skin and a strong immune system.
Beta carotene is a natural antioxidant and is usually taken to prevent cancer. But there is no evidence it works, and plenty to show that high doses can be harmful.

In 1994, researchers found that smokers who regularly took a large 20 mg dose of beta carotene a day were 8 per cent more likely to die from lung cancer than people who did not take the supplement.
As well as all this, beta carotene can also give white skin an orange tint, and can trigger upset stomachs, joint pain and dizziness.

 ●突然肌肉發達(短期內,約三個月內或更短時間);
 ●大量使用類個醇者,乳頭可能較凸出或較長;

How Chinese Ingenuity Destroyed Salad Bars at Pizza Hut

You had one trip to the salad bar. So dammit, you had to make it count.

In China, Pizza Huts are either take-out only or somewhat upscale sit-down restaurants that even serve steak. A while back, it became a fad of sorts to build enormous fruit and vegetable structures at Pizza Hut salad bars. The reason was that customers only got one plate and one trip to the salad bar, so they wanted their visit to be worth it. And was it ever.

The result was truly amazing and wonderfully creative plates of food. Yesterday, Japanese site LabaQ uploaded some classic "salad tower" pics:

There's an art and a craft to good salad stacking that, like with real structural engineering, needs good foundations to build higher and higher. Here, that strength comes from carrots, cucumbers, and croutons.
Here's a how-to:

How Chinese Ingenuity Destroyed Salad Bars at Pizza Hut

As The Beijinger first reported in 2009, Pizza Hut actually announced it was removing salad bars from its restaurants as part of a menu revamp. It was believed that salad stacking was to blame. Ya think?

However, according to the Baidu wiki, when Pizza Hut announced it was removing the salad bars, that apparently encouraged people to make salad towers before the salad bars were gone for good! Others in China agreed with Pizza Hut's decision because they felt these food structures were wasteful if people didn't finish eating them.

How Chinese Ingenuity Destroyed Salad Bars at Pizza Hut
It's unclear whether Pizza Hut was actually able to remove salad bars from all its restaurants in China. Kotaku's Beijing based writer Eric Jou says there are still salad bars in a Pizza Hut near him. Sadly though, there are no salad towers.

Top 10 Strange Islands Around The World

Islands are unique forms of land as they give amazing views and are rich in natural beauty. Some stand just a few meters away from coast while others stand in the midst of oceans far away from the main land. Most of the time the islands are bestowed with magnificent views of nature while at times it gains our attention due to something out of the ordinary; here is a list of islands that have attributes other than natural beauty and picturesque scenery that got our attention.

10: Palm Islands, Dubai

10. Palm Islands, Dubai

DubaiThe Palm Jumeirah is an artificial mad-made island off the coast of Jumeirah beach, Dubai. It should not come as a shock since Dubai homes other marvels such as an indoor ski resort and a 160 story skyscraper. But this engineering feat pulled within the city is something that put Dubai on the map. The island is 31 square kilometer in area with sixteen 1 kilometer fronts that are surrounded by a 11 km long circular barrier. It measure 5 km from the tip to the mainland [source: The Daily Mail]. The Palm is the brainchild of Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Makhtoum and the construction was carried out by Nakheel. They used around 92 million cubic meters of sand that they dredged from sea floor and boulder excavated from nearby mountain range. Surprisingly the Palm Jumeirah is not the only project in Dubai, artificial islands that is. Palm Jebel Ali, Palm Deira and “The World” are on their way to make a mark. However the 2008 financial crisis dealt a strong blow to these projects putting their future in doubt.

9: La Isla de las Munecas (The Island of the Dolls), Mexico

9. La Isla de las Munecas (The Island of the Dolls), Mexico

Dolls hang from the trees, dolls that are wrapped with spider webs and at times with insects crawling in and out of the empty eye sockets. It may seem more like a scene from a Hollywood horror movie but that is not the case. You can see such dolls and a relatively horrific outlook once you reach the La Isla de las Munecas, the island of the dolls. Now the legend behind this island is just as disturbing as the scene enunciated above. The island lies just outside of Mexico City, where a broken man who after the tragic death of his family came to live in the canals of Xochimilco. His name was Don Julian. It is said that one day Julian heard a woman screaming as if she was drowning in a nearby canal. Julian rushed to save her life, like a hero he jumped in and pulled her out. But sadly she died soon. After that Julian started to hear the girl’s screams on nightly basis and in an unsuccessful attempt to make the spirit of the girl go away he started to hang dolls from the trees. The number grew as he kept hearing screams night over night. With time his legend grew and people come to give him dolls that he then used to hang by the tress. 8: Socotra Island, Yemen

8. Socotra Island, Yemen

If you have seen the movie”the Mysterious Island” then you can probably relate to this island. The island is located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Yemen and Somalia. It is filled with breathtaking views, a mountain range (Haghier Mountains) reaching heights up to 1,525 meters and has arid lands. But the feature that gives it distinction are the flora and fauna that find their home on that island. Among the 300 plants, 24 reptiles and six birds that are unique to Socotra, is the dragon’s blood tree, an odd plant that is named for its bright red sap [source: SCDP].  From this tree’s thick central trunk, sturdy, gnarled branches fan out in a round umbrella shape and are topped with palm-like leaves. Another peculiar part of the island’s flora is the Socotran desert rose, a beige plant with pink flowers that’s best described as a giant rutabaga-like tree. The only drawback is the hostility of that region. The adjoining regions of the island are unstable otherwise the island would have been one of the most desired destinations for eco-tourists.

7: Fort Boyard, France

7. Fort Boyard, France

The island is home to Fort Boyard, a structure that kind of looks like a bath tub. Located just off the coast of France towards the west, the island lies midway between the islands of Oleron and Aix. What started off as a military buildup in the 1660’s when Louis XIV was ruling, the lead engineer suggested the king not to go ahead with the project. Work began on it under the order of Napoleon in 1804. It was never an easy task but the workers started off by dumping 75,000 cubic meters of rock onto the sandy floor. British attack hampered construction in 1809 and it was not started again till the next 30 years. It was completed in 1857 and the resulting oval-shaped island fortress measured 32 meters wide and 20 meters high and could support 250 soldiers and 74 guns. Since the structured was originally designed keeping in view the technology of guns of the time, it was started so naturally 200 years later the structure served no purpose. It has been used as a military prison, movie,TV backdrop and currently being used shooting of a French game show”Fort Boyard”.

6: The Floating Islands of Lake Titicaca, Peru

6. The Floating Islands of Lake Titicaca, Peru

Technically speaking, these are not islands but large mats. The Floating Islands of Lake Titicaca are one of the strangest tourist attractions. The reason behind this entire ordeal is the inhabitants; Uros. According to anthropologists, in pre-columbian times the Uros migrated from the Amazon and shifted to a region that is today Peru. As the Uros did not find land for themselves, they decided to make their own. The Uros live on large mats made of buoyant totora reeds reaching sizes upt to half a football field and 8 to 12 feet in depth tethered together as well as to the bottom of the lake. Originally they made their mats 9 miles into the lake but due to storms they were forced to move near to the coast. They were mostly fishermen but it is difficult to make living out of it because of the economic activity on the shore of the lake. Now they make their living by charging and selling things to the 200,000 visitor who come there every year.

Madagascar is not only the fourth largest island on planet earth but also on the most beautiful place on earth. Originally belonging to Africa, it was separated from it some 15 million years ago. Ever since the flora and fauna has evolved differently in comparison to the main land. The island is home to the most fascinating trees of which the baobab is top of the list. It’s a carrot-shaped tree with a thick trunk and high branches that can grow up to 24 meters tall. Lemurs, another interesting element found only on the island and the nearby islands also hold interest for the tourists. Since the country is originally poor and the 2009 coupe was like the last nail in the coffin as things seemed to get worse. Poaching of Madagascar’s wildlife and illicit harvesting of its trees is a common practice that the environmentalist hope to stop as it is destroying the island.

4: Alcatraz Island, United States

Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz is without doubt the most famous Island of America. A small rocky outpost in the midst of San Francisco Bay, California, the island has been used as a defense post by the military as well as a prison. Lt. Juan Manuel de Ayala was the first person to map it back in 1775 and named it “Isla de los Alcatraces”(Island of Pelicans) because of the seabirds that live there. U.S Army constructed a post there in 1853 from protection purposes and later transferred it to Federal Bureau of Prisons which converted the fortress into one of the most legendary prison.  Al Capone, Alvin Karpis, “Machine Gun” Kelly, Basil “The Owl” Banghart and Mickey Cohen were housed here before closing its doors in 1963. But the main reason for it being famous was because of the occupation of the island by American Indians from 1969 to 1971.

3: Hashima Island, Japan

3. Hashima Island, Japan

Located 9 miles southwest of Nagasaki, the island has a prolific history. The island is densely populated and had vital importance in the energy sector due to the presence of coal in the seabed beneath the island. Once the Japanese discovered coal, the Fukahori family installed the frist mineshaft on the island in 1887 and then sold it to Mitsubhi company. The company however had different plans as they expanded the operations and ended up enlarging the island from original size to 15.6 acres and then enclosed it with walls. Mitsubhishi made housing apartments for the workers. During WWII, Chinese and South Koreans were forced to work at the mines due to increase in demand. The population peaked in 195 by 5,259 persons per acre and that demanded for certain facilities. These included, a primary school, junior high school, playground, gymnasium, pinball parlor, movie theater, bars, restaurants, 25 different retail shops, hospital, hairdresser, Buddhist temple, Shinto shrine and even a brothel. The mine was ultimately closed in 1974 due to change in primary source of energy to petroleum.

1: Easter Island

1. Easter Island

How the inhabitants of the Easter Island did carve giant stone statues when the tools available to them were mere stones, bones and coral? The question still raises eyebrows to this day. The statues on the island are believed to be called as “moai” and the base as “ahu”. They average 13 feet (4 meters) in height and weigh in at a whopping 14 tons (12,700 kilograms), and were carved from rock quarried from a volcanic crater on the island’s eastern end, known as Rano Raraku. All together, there are 887 moai on Easter Island. Of those, 397 remain in Rano Raraku, and 92 lie in transit outside the quarry. Numerous methods have been suggested to explain how the early inhabitants moved these stone monuments — sleds, rolling logs, and even extraterrestrials — but the exact technique is still unknown.
