Here’s Why Android’s UI Will Never Be As Smooth As iOS Or Windows Phone 7
The news comes straight in the form of two posts over on Google’s struggling social network Google+: one by a Google engineer who talks about how graphics work on Android and the other by a 3rd year software engineering student in reply to the first post. Both are pretty lengthy and can get pretty technical, so we’ll try simplifying it as much as we can.
We’ll start off with Google engineer Dianne Hackborn’s post. She states that hardware acceleration – i.e. using the GPU, instead of CPU alone, to render the user-interface – has existed on Android since version 1.0 for things such as sliding the notification bar, pop-up dialogues etc. Full hardware acceleration only came with Android 3.0 Honeycomb and, unsurprisingly, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich actually has the same kind of hardware acceleration and this won’t necessarily sweeten things up.
Hackborn states that hardware acceleration “is not all full of win” since it takes away a lot of RAM when used for devices like Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus with OpenGL. Each process takes about 8MB of RAM and “isn’t worth it” considering the minimal effect it has on how “smooth” the UI looks after implementing it. So yes, hardware acceleration certainly helps, but it takes far too much processing power for it to be implemented to all parts of the UI.
She ends her post on how full, complete, A-to-Z hardware acceleration that results in 60 frames-per-second graphics is simply not possible, even with powerful chips like the Tegra 2.
Now, the question arises: why is it that even seemingly outdated phones like the iPhone 3GS offer a smoother UI than the latest Android smartphones? iOS uses hardware acceleration and that too on weaker hardware. How does Apple’s engineers manage to pull it off, then? Why can’t Google do the same?
That has been answered by Andrew Munn – software engineering student, ex-intern at Google and future intern with Windows Phone 7 team at Microsoft – who states that UI rendering processes in iOS occur with dedicated threads with real-time priority whereas on Android, UI rendering processes occur along with the main thread with normal priority. Whenever an iOS devices detects touch, it stops other processes and focuses all attention to rendering the UI. Android devices don’t do this, instead general processing and UI rendering occurs concurrently which results in choppy UI.
To see this in choppiness in action, check out the following video. Notice the choppiness around 1:50:
If you wish to get the details, with examples, of the how and why of Android graphics, hardware acceleration and UI rendering, check out Hackborn’s post here and Munn’s post here.

Adobe To Stop Developing Flash For Mobile
Flash to Focus on PC Browsing and Mobile Apps; Adobe to More Aggressively Contribute to HTML5
Adobe is all about enabling designers and developers to create the most expressive content possible, regardless of platform or technology. For more than a decade, Flash has enabled the richest content to be created and deployed on the web by reaching beyond what browsers could do. It has repeatedly served as a blueprint for standardizing new technologies in HTML. Over the past two years, we’ve delivered Flash Player for mobile browsers and brought the full expressiveness of the web to many mobile devices.
However, HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively. This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms. We are excited about this, and will continue our work with key players in the HTML community, including Google, Apple, Microsoft and RIM, to drive HTML5 innovation they can use to advance their mobile browsers.
Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook. We will of course continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations. We will also allow our source code licensees to continue working on and release their own implementations.
These changes will allow us to increase investment in HTML5 and innovate with Flash where it can have most impact for the industry, including advanced gaming and premium video. Flash Player 11 for PC browsers just introduced dozens of new features, including hardware accelerated 3D graphics for console-quality gaming and premium HD video with content protection. Flash developers can take advantage of these features, and all that our Flash tooling has to offer, to reach more than a billion PCs through their browsers and to package native apps with AIR that run on hundreds of millions of mobile devices through all the popular app stores, including the iTunes App Store, Android Market, Amazon Appstore for Android and BlackBerry App World.
We are already working on Flash Player 12 and a new round of exciting features which we expect to again advance what is possible for delivering high definition entertainment experiences. We will continue to leverage our experience with Flash to accelerate our work with the W3C and WebKit to bring similar capabilities to HTML5 as quickly as possible, just as we have done with CSS Shaders. And, we will design new features in Flash for a smooth transition to HTML5 as the standards evolve so developers can confidently invest knowing their skills will continue to be leveraged.
We are super excited about the next generations of HTML5 and Flash. Together they offer developers and content publishers great options for delivering compelling web and application experiences across PCs and devices. There is already amazing work being done that is pushing the newest boundaries, and we can’t wait to see what is still yet to come!
Danny Winokur is the Vice President and General Manager of Interactive Development at Adobe

Explosion At Subang Empire Shopping Gallery
Manchester United was playing Basel in the UEFA Champions League and was leading by 2-0 in first-half. Few minutes after the second-half kicked-off; I got the shock of my life when I heard a loud explosion that shook my entire house. In fact the blast was so powerful; my entire SS17 neighborhood was affected. Car alarms are wailing and dogs are barking.
Thinking it could be another freak thunder, I quickly peek through my window only to see a peaceful sight. I decided to take a look around the neighbourhood and it was then I found out that the explosion came from Empire Shopping Gallery. According to a friend on Twitter, the explosion can even be heard all the way from SS14.
I reached the scene at about 4.00am. At the time, police are already securing the area and putting up barriers. More police cars and fire engines arrived at the scene. Nobody had any idea of what had happened. Some can only speculate that the ground floor parking lot of Empire Shopping Gallery had already collapsed.
As I make my way to closer to the scene, I could clearly see that an explosion blasted through partial of the building. A quick glance from outside, the explosion caused an extensive damage to the whole left wing of Empire Shopping Gallery. CIMB Bank, Serai, Starbucks Coffee and Coach outlet are badly damaged.
Probably around 6-7 fire engines arrived at the scene.
Ambulance are here too although there wasn’t any casualty, I heard.
The entrance to the basement car park. As you can see, it’s smoky after the fire are being put off.
A look on the left wing of Empire Shopping Gallery. Devastation.
CIMB, Tangs, Starbucks, Serai and Coach outlets effected.
The powerful force of the explosion literally pushes the car aside.
Residence and passers-by looking at the damage from afar.
This is the effected side of Empire Shopping Gallery.
The force is so powerful; the glass panel at the front door of Wisma Consplant is shattered. Yes, it’s right opposite of the explosion.
Nicole, a resident of Subang SOHO reported that she was awake and on the way to the washroom when she heard the loud explosion. She quickly makes her way out from her unit taking the stairs. She’s without her wallet and mobile phone as she left everything behind. She was on the 5th floor.
According to another resident, Weed, who was on the 10th floor, was watching the UEFA Champions League when he heard the tremendous explosion. “I was watching the match when I heard and felt the explosion. I quickly hold my TV and said ‘whoa’”.
However, it was a different case for Ian, who was fast asleep on the 9th floor when he was rudely awakened by the loud blast.
Many hotel guests made their way out of the building safely. Some residents of Subang SOHO were still in their unit only to be woken by Firemen knocking on their door.
So far there’s no casualty except for an injured guard who managed to get out alive. There is no official announcement yet but there are speculations that it could be some gas leakage from the LG floor of the building. Some road users on Federal Highway reported that the P1 & P2 underground car parks have collapsed.
As of 7.30am just now, the building is still being sealed off. Nobody is allowed to enter the building. Guests from the hotel and residents from Subang SOHO are currently being relocated to Dorsett Hotel and Sunway Hotel.

1.4 Million Lose Electricity in Area Around San Diego
LOS ANGELES — A power failure swept through Southern California on Thursday afternoon, leaving more than a million people without electricity in an area that extended from the coast east to Arizona and south into Mexico.
San Diego Gas and Electric, which supplies power to much of the region, said that the exact cause was unknown, but that the system may have been overwhelmed by a heat wave. Officials said the blackout was not the result of terrorist activity.
All of the company’s 1.4 millions consumers were without power on Thursday, as the failures, centered in San Diego, stretched as far north as Orange County, south into Mexico, and east into Arizona. On its Web site, San Diego Gas and Electric said the blackout could continue into Friday and urged residents to exercise care in driving and stay home at night.
San Diego residents described a chaotic scene after the power went out around 4 p.m. Police officers were sent to busy intersections to direct traffic. Without the Internet, lights or any idea when power might return, workers headed home, only to turn back to the office after sitting in traffic even worse than usual.
All outbound flights from San Diego International Airport were stopped. Some inbound flights were allowed, but Rebecca Bloomfield, an airport spokeswoman, said many were diverted to other airports.
Jason Bump, who turned 38 on Thursday, had hoped to head home early to celebrate his birthday. But he was stranded in the parking lot of his office in Carlsbad, Calif., throwing a football around with co-workers.
“I almost took the day off for my birthday,” he said. “I probably should have.”
San Diego Gas and Electric said the blackout seemed to have originated in northern Arizona. It said it was working to repair the two lines that had been “tripped off,” resulting in the failure throughout the region, but made no estimate of when service would be restored.
Late in the afternoon, the San Diego Police Department reported many calls about the blackout, but no other major problems related to the power failure.
San Diego residents called friends around the country for updates on the blackout, as rumors flew about what was going on. Some people lucky enough to make it home organized neighborhood gatherings. Carrie Sandys bought the last of the ice from a corner store and planned a barbecue with her neighbors to use up their produce, now that their refrigerators were out.
They had meat and beer on ice, but still, they could not turn on the opening game of the National Football League season.

London riots: Violence erupts for third day
Fires have been burning in parts of London after a third day of violence and looting on the city's streets.
Shops were looted and buildings set alight as police clashed with youths. The trouble also spread to Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Bristol.
Violence first flared on Saturday after a peaceful protest in Tottenham over the fatal shooting of a man by police.
The prime minister is returning early from holiday to chair a meeting of the government's emergency committee Cobra.
David Cameron, who is on holiday in Italy, was due to board a flight on Monday night ahead of a meeting with Home Secretary Theresa May and Acting Metropolitan Police Commissioner Tim Godwin on Tuesday.
A government spokesman said the prime minister has been monitoring the situation on "an hourly basis".
At least 225 people have been arrested and 36 charged following the riots across London over the past three days, Scotland Yard said.
It added that an extra 1,700 officers had been deployed across the capital on Monday night. Nine police forces from other parts of the country were assisting in providing support, as well as the City of London Police and British Transport Police.
Commander Christine Jones, from the Met, said: "The violence we have seen is simply inexcusable.
"Ordinary people have had their lives turned upside down by this mindless thuggery. The Met will ensure that those responsible will face the consequences of their actions and be arrested."
Monday's violence started in Hackney after a man was stopped and searched by police but nothing was found.
The trouble spread outside London on Monday evening and early on Tuesday, with police in riot gear being deployed in Birmingham city centre after scores of youths rampaged through the shopping area, smashing windows and looting from shops.
West Midlands Police also confirmed that a police station in Holyhead Road in Handsworth, Birmingham, was on fire.
In Birmingham, police said officers had made 100 arrests.
There were reports of cars being damaged in Manchester and of up to 200 youths with masks roaming through Toxteth in Liverpool.
Merseyside police said they were dealing with a number of incidents in south Liverpool, including cars being set alight.
Police in Bristol said they were dealing with outbreaks of disorder involving about 150 people.
Meanwhile in London:
- Several fires broke out in Croydon, including one at a large sofa factory which spread to neighbouring buildings and tram lines
- In Hackney 200 riot officers with dogs and mounted police were located around Mare Street where police cars were damaged
- Looters raided a Debenhams store and a row of shops in Lavender Hill in Clapham, as well as shops in Stratford High Street
- More than 100 people looted a Tesco store in Bethnal Green, the Met said, and two officers were injured
- Cars were set on fire in Lewisham
- A bus and shop were set alight in Peckham
- Buses were diverted as the violence spread to Bromley High Street
- There were reports of looting of phone shops in Woolwich High Street, in south London, and a torched police car
- Shops and restaurants were damaged in Ealing, west London, and there was a fire in Haven Green park opposite Ealing Broadway Tube
- Football matches at Charlton and West Ham which were due to be played on Tuesday have been postponed at the request of the police
- At Clapham Junction looters stole masks from a fancy dress store to hide their identity
The fresh violence prompted Mr Godwin to call on parents to contact their children and urge the public to clear London's streets.
In the first outbreak of violence on Monday, groups of people began attacking the police in Hackney at about 16:20 BST, throwing rocks and a bin at officers.

Police cars were also smashed by youths armed with wooden poles and metal bars.
Looters also smashed their way into shops, including a JD Sports store, before being dispersed by police.
One resident in Croydon, who gave his name as Adam, said he saw two cars which had been set on fire.
He said: "One older woman was dragged out and they set the car on fire. Then another car around the corner was on fire, then we counted about 12 to 15 shops that had been looted.
"The looting started about three hours ago. I just came back into my apartment and the looting was still going on - not a single policeman."
Ealing resident Christian Potts, 29, was driving through the area when he witnessed the disturbances.
"It looks like a war zone - I have never seen anything like it in all my life," he said.
"There were about 25 to 30 masked youths on Haven Green and they just started tearing into a florist with bricks.
"It's a local family-run business so I can't see why they are doing this."
In Birmingham City Centre looters attacked shops, smashing windows and stealing items.
An eyewitness said windows have been smashed in McDonalds and Jessops near Birmingham Cathedral and a sign has been thrown through a gym window.
London's mayor Boris Johnson is cutting short his holiday to return to the city.
Home Secretary Theresa May also returned early from holiday, to meet Metropolitan Police (Met) chiefs to discuss their response to the violence.
At the scene
In a lane off Mare Street the wreckage of a burnt-out car still smoulders, surrounded by riot police.
I was talking to one young man who had received on his BlackBerry a list of places where he said there will be further trouble tonight.
He didn't tell me which places and stressed it is speculation. But he and a friend told me frustration with poverty in the area was boiling over.
On Mare Street there is the sound of crunching as police vans run over broken glass. Much of it from a bottle bank which was overturned providing makeshift missiles for rioters who lobbed the bottles at police.
Mrs May condemned the riots as "sheer criminality" and said those responsible would "face the consequences of their actions".
The trouble follows two nights of violence over the weekend which started after police shot a man dead in Tottenham.
Mrs May said: "The riots in Tottenham on Saturday night and the subsequent disturbances in other parts of London are totally unacceptable."
A peaceful protest in Tottenham on Saturday over the fatal shooting by police of Mark Duggan, 29, was followed by violence which spread into Sunday.
A candlelit vigil was due to be held at The High Cross in Tottenham on Monday evening.
Met Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stephen Kavanagh said there were "significant resources" on the streets, with a third more officers on duty than on Sunday.
He said: "When we have large numbers of criminals intent on that type of violence, we can only do that, get lots of officers there quickly and try to protect local businesses and local people."
But eyewitnesses reported as trouble spread across the city, there were often few police officers around when violence flared.

Dow Jones Suffers Worst Day Since 2008 Crisis As Economic Outlook Darkens And Downgrade Risks Loom
NEW YORK -- Stocks suffered one of the worst sell-offs in history Monday, as investors adjusted to a new world in which the United States government doesn't have a perfect credit rating, and a fresh recession seems increasingly possible.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost more than 630 points, logging a drop of nearly 5.6 percent in its worst day since the depths of the financial crisis in late 2008. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index lost nearly 6.7 percent. The NASDAQ fell 6.9 percent.
The plunge eclipsed last Thursday's drop, which at the time was the worst day for the Dow since the 2008 crisis, and it comes after two weeks of nearly constant losses in stocks. Gloom pervades financial markets, despite the deal that Washington lawmakers struck last week to avoid a disastrous sovereign default, and despite reassurances from the nation's leaders that the economy's troubles will eventually be resolved.
A fundamental shift in attitudes is taking place, experts say, as financial players digest the possibility that the economy could begin to shrink.
"This negative possibility sitting there that we can articulate, and see, and almost taste at this stage, is a reason for stocks to go down," said John Richards, head of strategy at Royal Bank of Scotland in the Americas. "People are starting to factor in a double-dip recession."
The historic downgrade issued Friday by the rating agency Standard & Poor's amounts to the tip of an iceberg, as the company is in the process of reducing the ratings of credits associated with the federal government. These downgrades began Monday and are likely to continue, setting off new ripples of risk.
The mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which own or guarantee about half of all U.S. mortgages, saw their top grades docked by S&P on Monday. Federally backed debt issues of Tacoma, Washington and Miami, Florida, had their top grades lowered.
S&P docked the grades of bonds issued by Israel that are guaranteed by the U.S. government. It lowered the ratings of five U.S.-based insurers. It downgraded large institutions that facilitate investors' trades.
While the effects of these downgrades so far seem relatively muted -- some, like those for Fannie and Freddie, were expected -- the full risks might not yet have materialized, experts said.
One immediate effect was psychological.
"If there were people last week who were nervous about the economy and nervous about stocks, and needed some excuse to sell, this may well have provided the excuse," said Amar Bhide, a professor of international business at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
A stream of economic data in recent weeks has reinforced a pessimistic outlook: Economic growth has slowed, the manufacturing sector has weakened, consumer spending has fallen and unemployment remains high. It's a potentially malevolent mix, economists say.
Investors shunned risk Monday, piling into Treasury securities despite the tarnished rating of long-term U.S. government debt. With a sovereign debt crisis building in Europe, and with grim American economic prospects, investors were eager to lend money to the government that by many measures is still the most reliable borrower in the world.
As demand for Treasury debt surged, interest rates on the 10-year note neared 2.3 percent Monday, a low that recalled early 2009, when the economy was suffering from a devastating financial crisis. Gold, which investors treat as a safe haven, climbed to fresh highs on Monday.
Although borrowing costs remain at historic lows, the downgrade could potentially affect funds that are required to hold highly-rated securities. And over time, it could push up yields on a range of assets that are tied to U.S. government rates.
In a recent quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Morgan Stanley underscored this uncertainty.
"Because of the unprecedented nature of negative credit rating actions with respect to U.S. government obligations, the ultimate impacts on global markets and our business, financial condition and liquidity are unpredictable and may not be immediately apparent," the firm said.
But the direct effects of the triple-A downgrade are only part of the picture. Risks from the related downgrades could play out over the coming months and years, experts said.
"Fannie and Freddie are involved in securitizing mortgages, so if their costs go up, then implicitly we're going to see mortgage costs go up. Auto loans are going to go up, student loans are going to go up," said Andrew Lo, a professor of finance at the MIT Sloan School of Business.
"American voters are going to realize that the political impasse has consequences that will hit them in the pocketbook," he added.
The downgrades touched major components of the financial system. For some of these credits, especially in the municipal debt arena, ratings carry potentially greater meaning than they do for the U.S. government, which investors know is a safe bet. Downgrades could cause municipal investments to lose value, said Matt Fabian, managing director of the Concord, Mass.-based Municipal Market Advisors.
"When you start tampering with ratings that actually imply default risk, the implication is that default risk has increased for those credits," Fabian said. "There could be price declines. There could be selling in response to price declines."
These risks contributed to a broader picture of economic pessimism Monday, as investors lost appetite for holding risky assets like stocks.
And the stock market slide added a threat of its own, as hundreds of billions of dollars of wealth vanished.
"We're starting to whack consumer wealth again, which will impact spending," said Richards of RBS.
"That may have an immediate negative impact on consumer confidence, and possibly consumer spending," he added, "which is the last thing we need in an otherwise weakened economic environment."

709 的花絮和感想 (Something about 709) (709 Bersih 2.0)
********************************* Translated in English *******************************
1. A Malay friend, who I just get to know during the rally, a PAS member who is experienced in participating rallies and demonstrations, shaked my hand and says: "Thanks for your (we Chinese's) support." I replied: "No problem. That's what I should do. This is my country too." (Now only I realized that, in their eye, we Chinese only cares about money-making and all sorts of benefits. They are already very happy even though there're only a few Chinese came to support the cause.)
2. A Chinese uncle, along with his wife, and his two around-twenty-years-old son, who are tall but look frail, came to the rally. The father said: "Come on, follow up the crowd! We're not going to seek death, so why feel afraid? We're not VIP as well. We need many people right now. We must go to support the rally now..." (Most parents scolded their children for attending the rally, and children encouraged their parents to attend the rally, but how come this family is totally the reverse?)
3. An old Malay man told a few Chinese youngsters: "kita mahu tunjuk perasaan ,bukan kemarahan". (Their EQ in rally is higher than Chinese, so they have the qualification to teach us what to do.)
4. A pair of Malay couples, along with their two childrens, looks like 8-10 years old, sat at the stairs and having their snacks. I thought: "Picnic?" The Malay wife caught my attention, and she smiled: "I want to teach them how to fight for democracy since small." (I quickly showed my support to them. I feel ashamed to look down at them.)
5. A pair of old Malay couples, hands trembling, took out a mask from a plastic bag, asked me with confidence: "We have got ourselves ready. How about you?" (You two need it, I thought, because you two can't run fast.)
6. A pair of young Chinese couples, along with their baby, attended the rally. Soon it began to rain. They quickly wore raincoats, and even got their baby ready with a raincoat. I quickly helped them to cover up their baby trolley. (Even a baby was there. Oh my, the baby is so cute.) Talked about this scene after I went back home and having my dinner. Those auntie neighbours said: "Aiyah, rally for what? Nothing to do with us ma.. Brainless ah? Bring baby go? Why you don't scold them?" (Aunties, I want to scold you, not them..)
7. A middle-aged foreigner, seeing me running towards FRU and trying to capture how FRU dispersed the crowd, follows me all the way, and told me: "you must put it in the media" (Mister, my photo capturing skills sucks..)
8. One of my Malay friend told me, he has been to rallies before, and he's not afraid of tyrant government. He said he's going to take care of me. During the first round of tear gas, he dragged me and run away. I thought: "You told me you're not afraid?" He brought me away from the crowd, pointed to a direction, and told me: "Walk through here. Wait for us at Merdeka Stadium. We will be there. Do contact your friends. Our objective today has been achieved, because we have so many people here. The police will launch more attacks. You cannot stay at here." "What about you?" I asked. "I'm going back to the frontline, and fight along with my friends", he replied, and turned back to the smokes..
I met with my friends nearby Merdeka Stadium later on, participated the last rally to Merdeka Stadium, until the police dispersed us again. And I never see my Malay friend again. I only got to know that he was arrested later on, and has been released.
I saw a lot of stories, including that Amah's one. I didn't cry when I read this stories, until I saw this one on the Internet:
"The most unforgettable moment during the rally happened when we are trying to escape from the police in the Tong Shin Hospital. We were at the fence at the back of the hospital. The Malays kicked the fence door down, and said: "bagi cina semua keluar dulu......." It really went into my heart. Here, I experienced the true 1Malaysia spirit, that we are no longer differentiated by race and culture, that all races take care of each other, instead of "1 Bumiputera, 1 Malaysia", the propaganda of BN.
I nearly cried. I knew that they're speaking the truth. My Malay friends always take good care of me. And a lot of Chinese who participated in the rally said that, they are being taken care well by the Malays. Maybe they think that this is the first time we Chinese attended a rally, and so we're inexperienced.
Why I'm feeling so emotional over this? Because I understand that, Chinese is a race of minority in Malaysia. If we couldn't break the barrier of racism, we Chinese will be continued to be opressed, we will continued to be treated with unfairness. But the government always plays around with racism, plus that PERKASA who fully utilized such issue, and this makes racism even harder to solve. What I saw after this rally, is hope. I have completely changed my perception to Malays. I think that, even though our nation is ruined by Malay politicians, but our nation will be revived by Malays. I still feel confident to Malaysia.
My dear Chinese friends, a peaceful rally is not scary, so please come to support next time!
